Press communication 2006.26Nijmegen, 24 July 2006.

Four Days Marches Board has announced external investigation
The Four Days Marches Board has decided that there will be an independent, external investigation into the decision-making process concerning the events of the first day of the 90th Four Days Marches.

The investigation will be led by Mr. drs. L.M.L.H.A. (Loek) Hermans. Mr. Hermans is currently the chairman of the Board of ‘MKB Nederland’. He was, among others, minister in the government of prime minister Kok. Mr. Hermans knows the Four Days Marches also from the time that he studied in Nijmegen and was a member of the local government. He himself has walked the Four Days Marches twice.

Mr. Hermans has been asked to form a committee and investigate the decision-making process on Monday July 17, in which it has been decided not to change the walking distance nor the starting times. The investigation will also look into procedural and organizational matters within the Four Days Marches organization, and will attempt to provide some clear recommendations.

Committee chairman Mr. Hermans will himself invite members to the committee, perhaps experts in the fields of physiology, meteorology, decision-making and crisis co-ordination. The results of this investigation will most likely be published in October 2006, and will be publicly presented. Next to this, the Nijmegen local government has also announced that it will undertake an investigation.
